Biography

Composer, sound engineer, teacher, Doctor of Musical Arts. He is a graduate of the Chopin University of Music in the field of sound engineering and composition (in the class of Zygmunt Krauze) as well as of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw. In 2016, he defended his doctorate in the discipline of musical arts. He is an assistant professor at the Chair of Composition of the Department of Composition and Theory of Music of the Chopin University of Music and head of the Chopin University Electronic Music Studio.

His works have been performed at many festivals in Poland and abroad, e.g. New Music Concerts, Warsaw Autumn, Intersonanzen,Musica Electronica Nova, Afect Festival, Poznań Music Spring, Sacrum Profanum, AudioArt, by such ensembles as MusikFabrik, Kalngforum Wien, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Gorzów Philharmonic, New Music Concerts Ensemble, Wratislavia Orchestra, Kwartludium, Ensemble Nostri Temporis, or Hashtag Ensemble. In 2020, he was distinguished with the Order of Merit for Polish Culture, awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

He has won a number of awards in composition competitions, e.g. the Prix CIME 2019 (award of the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music) for the piece #NetworkMusic, 3rd prize in the 1st International Krzysztof Penderecki Composers’ Competition ‘Arboretum’ (2012), or 1st prize in the 52nd Tadeusz Baird Competition for Young Composers (2011). His piece Warsaw Music was in the final of the European Broadcasting Union EBU Palma Ars Acustica Competition 2016. In 2017, he participated in the Composer Collider programme with the MusikFabrik ensemble. He has released four monographic albums – Music of Strings (2022, Chopin University Press), General Theory of Relativity (KAIROS, 2021), Trash Music (2018, Requiem Records) and Loopowizacje (2013, For Tune), as well as improvised albums with Hashtag Ensemble and Intuition Orchestra: Visegrad Songs (2015, Requiem Records), #Witkacy (2018, Requiem Records) and Summa Intuitiva(2021, Audio Cave).

He composes both electroacoustic music and music without the use of electronics. He specializes in live sound processing of acoustic instruments and sound objects. He is the creator of objectophones – instruments made of everyday objects whose sound is processed live – and of gestophone – an electronic instrument where the performer uses gestures to control sound parameters. He creates both theatre (over twenty performances) and film music (over a dozen documentaries).

Wojciech Błażejczyk is an active guitarist. He performs new music on the electric guitar and with the use of electronics. He has nearly one hundred world premieres to his credit. He has performed, among others, at the following festivals: Warsaw Autumn, Sacrum Profanum, Musica Polonica Nova, Musica Electronica Nova, AdLibitum, Audio Art, Ankunft: Neue Musik, Olympus Jazz Festival, Meridien, Poznań Spring, or EXPERIMENTELLE MUSIK. He is a member of the Hashtag Ensemble. He also performs improvised music (he has performed with Kawalerowie Błotni, Electronisches Glück, Adam Pierończyk, Agata Zubel, Krzysztof Knittel, Joëlle Léandre, among others), using objectophones and unusual string instruments. He co-creates the ensemble Niemy Movie, performing live music to silent films.

As a sound engineer, he specializes in recording contemporary music, sound projection at concerts of new music, and sound design for films. He has conducted workshops on electronic music at the ‘Synthesis’ International Summer Course for Composers in Radziejowice. He also conducts workshops for children on electroacoustic music and on the use of objects in music.
