Re-Used Sounds

Re-Used Sounds is a new solo electronic project by Wojciech Błażejczyk. Musical structures are created using various types of sound waste: the sounds of worn-out, used objects (objectophones); electromagnetic interference emitted by modern devices (phones, tablets, smartwatches) transferred into the audible spectrum; field recordings of various human voices, transportation and devices; sounds from modern media, constituting information noise, downloaded from the internet. From this sonic wasteland, Błażejczyk constructs live electronic sound textures with surprisingly reach and diverse timbres, engaging the audience, who can use their phones to join in the process of creating music from re-used sounds.

The artist uses worn-out objects as instruments, including a lampshade (lampophone), a kitchen hood (hoodophone), a cake stand (paterophone), a clock spring. He combines their organic, unsettling sounds with field recordings and samples captured in spaces overflowing with sonic waste—at train stations, shopping malls, city streets, server rooms, machine rooms. Electromagnetic interference emitted by electronic devices (phones, laptops, cash registers, even elevator buttons) also becomes a sound source. Transmitted into the audible range using the Ether SOMA Labs device, they sound like a powerful analog synthesizer. Błażejczyk also plays with sounds taken from contemporary mass media—the internet and television stations—filtering them through an overdriven electric guitar, using miniature speakers moved across the guitar strings.

Błażejczyk processes all these sounds live using advanced electronics in the Max object-oriented programming environment. From the audio wasteland, through sonic recycling, organic, unsettling textures, self-modulating beats, and melancholic harmonies emerge, naturally combined with sounds of people and machines. In one piece, the audience can co-create the music by connecting via mobile phones to a specially prepared app. The Re-Used Sounds project premiered on May 11, 2025, at Krytyka Polityczna as part of the Free Sundays series. It was also presented at Hevre in Krakow, among others, as part of the Sound Postcard series.
